Another Mega-Development Announced for Dubai

An 800 million-square-foot, $60 billion development, to be built in the Dubai desert was announced this morning by the emirate’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The new city, to be called Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, will be built around four houses, or centers. The House of Humanity, one of the centers, will include the Humanitarian Establishment, Sheik Mohammed’s charitable organization, along with museums. The House of Commerce will contain office space that is envisioned by the developer, Dubai Properties, to include multi-national corporations. The House of Wisdom includes translation facilities, a library and what the developers call a “knowledge garden.” Universities, colleges of history and science, and a mosque are also slated to be included. The fourth development node, The House of Nature, is dedicated to the environment, with parks, zoological gardens, hotels, alternative medical and herbal clinics, laboratory space, and institutions and colleges specializing in conservation and the natural sciences. In a statement, the developer said the city will include more parkland that New York City and London combined. The sky seems to be the limit for development in Dubai, as the rulers of the emirate continue to transform it into the Middle East’s financial and tourism hub. Developer Sama Dubai broke ground on June 21 on Dubai Towers-Dubai. That 12.5 million-square-foot development will incorporate high-end retail, restaurants, entertainment venues, health spas, gymnasiums, hotels and residential apartments. The estimated completion date of the complex is 2014. And as reported by CPN on June 3, The Rezidor Hotel Group is expanding its presence in Dubai. The company will build two hotels with a total of 450 rooms, scheduled to open in late 2011. In December, Rezidor also announced it was building the Radisson Hotel Jumeirah Dubai, a 240-room hotel set to open in late 2009. Also this month, Zabeel Properties announced it is planning an 800-room, upper-upscale resort in Dubai, which will be designed in part by actor Brad Pitt.Blog Story and Comments
