Supply chain automation firm Barcoding Inc. will relocate its headquarters within the former I.C. Isaacs & Co. garment factory in Baltimore’s Highlandtown neighborhood. Barcoding acquired the 31,000-square-foot building earlier this year and is relocating and consolidating several offices due to recent growth. According to public records, the Highlandtown asset last traded this August, for $685,000.

Located at 3840 Bank St., the single-story building is situated just 1.5 miles away from Barcoding’s current headquarters in the Canton neighborhood, at 2220 Boston St. The new base is within one mile of both Patterson Park and the Canton Crossing shopping mall. Barcoding will use the space for the production, repair and testing of mobile devices, among other tasks, and expects to move into the building by the end of 2018.

Historic preservation

Local firm Urban Design Group will oversee the facility’s design. The company’s track record includes several historic preservation projects in the city, among them the rehabilitation of the downtown Central Savings building owned by Poverni Sheikh Group and Meisel Capital Partners. The conversion of Barcoding’s future base recently received $795,000 in historic tax credits from the Maryland Historical Trust.

“At this point in time, construction in Baltimore is lacking, motivating us to double down and create a state-of-the-art facility … In addition, as we redevelop the I.C. Isaacs & Co. garment factory, we are doing everything we can to repurpose materials of the building, such as using the original garment tables in our staging configuration area,” said Jay Steinmetz, CEO of Barcoding, in prepared remarks.
