Century-Old Marigny Building to Convert to M-U Apartments

Julian Doerr Mutter, president & CEO of Doerr Furniture, recently announced plans to redevelop the three-story brick building at 511 Marigny St. and transform it into 48 apartments with commercial space on the ground floor.
Built in 1907 and expanded in 1936, the building served at different times as a sock factory, liquor distributor and department store headquarters. The company bought the property in 1992 at a foreclosure sale from Whitney National Bank, according to the Times-Picayune. The new project calls for a $15 million investment, with construction expected to start in December if everything goes as planned, and it will be completed within one year of the kickoff date.
If it comes to fruition, the mixed-use development will enjoy a prime location within the New Orleans market; bounded by Marigny, Mandeville, Chartres and Decatur streets, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse is located a block off of Elysian Fields Avenue and close to the French Quarter, in an area booming with new construction projects. Designed as a bicycle-friendly complex, the new apartment building will include spacious units, a garden area on the roof and a shaded pavilion area with a workout room, pool and barbecue, among other featured amenities. “There will be both interior and covered parking for bicyclists,” Mutter told the Times Picayune. “I’m really looking for the building to complement the idea of sustainability and the ‘complete streets’ movement in the city.”
In other news, Donahue Favret Contractors Inc. was selected to build the Mid-City Market shopping center. Stirling Properties plans to break ground on the $25 million project in January 2012, if the financing scheme gets approved, the Times Picayune reported.
Located along Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans, Mid-City Market will serve as the retail and restaurant center for the community and will be anchored by a 53,000-square-foot Winn-Dixie supermarket.
