Although the official groundbreaking for the VA Medical Center in Aurora took place back in 2009, construction has been delayed. But The Kansas City Business Journal reports that an agreement has just been reached between the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the contractor Kiewit-Turner.

The announcement comes after Ed Perlmutter, D-Golden, whose 7th Congressional District includes the project site, and Colorado’s U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Mark Udall, wrote to VA Secretary Eric Shinesky urging for a resolution between the two sides and highlighting the importance of the project. Permultter reminded the Secretary that thousands of construction jobs were on hold. According to him the dispute was regarding who would be responsible for the cost overruns.

The VA project has been discussed for 10 years and now VA officials expect it will be completed by early 2015. Approximately 10,000 temporary jobs will be created and upon completion the hospital will employ 1,800 full-time staff.

As reported by Commercial Property Executive, the new hospital will occupy 31 acres on the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center site. Kiewit-Turner is a joint venture led by Omaha-based Kiweit Building Group and New York City-based Turner Construction. The project was designed by H+L Architecture, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill L.L.P. and others.

Also making healthcare headlines, Centura Health has entered into exclusive negotiations with EFG Brownfield Partners LLC for the sale of the 18.85-acre St. Anthony Central Hospital Campus in west Denver.

Doug Elenowitz, executive vice president with EFG, announced that a mixed use development is planned for the site owned by Catholic Health Initiatives and operated by Centura Health.
