Another large healthcare project is in the works. DPR Construction has officially broken ground on the new 230,000-square-foot Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Patient Care Pavilion for Sutter Health in Oakland, California. Slated for completion in early 2014, the $350 million building will house 238 medical/surgical and acute rehabilitation beds.
Additionally, the 11-story project will house a new emergency department, a 1,000-space parking structure and other green space. It will rise 184 feet above ground, with two below-ground stories.
DPR project engineer Peter Lockett said that green construction features include target value design, in which cost and constructability inform the design process, and the Last Planner system, which includes pull-planning and scheduling. DPR project manager Jay Waiddifield added that at the height of construction, approximately 270 new construction jobs will be created.
Founded in 1990, DPR now has 17 offices nationwide. It has built projects for Apple, Digital Realty Trust, Genentech, Hewlett-Package and Kaiser Permanente.
