Home to the tallest, largest and other record-breaking facilities, Dubai has now risen to the zenith of green building standards.

The Change Initiative prototype store located at Sheikh Zayed Road in Al Barsha has recently been declared the most sustainable building in the world by the U.S. Green Building Council.

According to AME Info, the 43,000 square-foot, two-story retail facility has earned an impressive 107 points out of a maximum of 110 accounted for in the current LEED sustainability guidelines. This achievement marks the world’s highest scoring LEED Platinum certification, breaking the previous record of 104 points

LEED points are awarded for a combination of criteria, including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation in Design, and Regional Priority.

“We are very pleased to announce that The Change Initiative has received the LEED Platinum certification, surpassing all previous records for sustainability; to take pole position as the most sustainable building in the world,” said Gundeep Singh, CEO & Founder of The Change Initiative. “This is a proud moment for The Change Initiative, Dubai and the UAE. We would like to thank our employees, government bodies, partners and suppliers, media and our customers, for unparalleled support and continued encouragement. We look forward to working closely with all of our stakeholders, and together taking small steps on our journey towards responsible living across the UAE.”

Designed by HOK, the one-stop shop caters to individuals who are interested in making environmentally responsible purchases for their home or workplace. The store opened in May 2012 as Dubai’s first retail destination to sell only green products and services.

“Dubai can now also be known for inhabiting the most sustainable building in addition to all the other great feats the country has accomplished. We believe that it is our duty to positively affect any community in which we operate, said Loek Malmberg, chairman of The Change Initiative. “In this regard, we support the UAE’s national vision which supports sustainability and environmental protection. Moreover, Dubai increasingly understands the importance of introducing more sustainable practices in order to safeguard its long-term prosperity. We intend to facilitate this understanding by making products and services available to both individuals and corporate citizens in the UAE.”

“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council. “The Change Initiative efficiently uses our natural resources to make an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”

Founded in 2008, The Change Initiative is a UAE-based sustainability venture focused on providing sustainable solutions for consumers and corporations. The company’s ‘Whole of Life’ business model includes five main categories: Energy, Water, Waste, Food and Lifestyle.
