Work on a new redevelopment project in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market has begun with the renovation of Shed 5, the northernmost enclosed shed in the market and the core of the market. The $3.9 million upgrade is expected to help improve the food district’s critical areas and transform the place into a creative, state-of-the art space for culinary professionals.
As reported by Model D, the complex renovation at Shed 5 will include adding radiant heat in the floors, energy efficient windows and doors, new bathrooms, a new roof and new technical systems. The city of Detroit granted almost 50 percent of the funding need for renovation, while the other half is coming from private foundations such as Whole Foods, W.K. Kellogg, Kresge, Ford and Erb Family.
Shed 5 is being redeveloped by Urban Life Development under plans by Kraemer Design Group and, once finished, it will include a shared-use community kitchen that will serve as a food and nutrition information point for the community with expertise and mentoring coming from Michigan State University. Eastern Market Corporation president Dan Carmody told Crain’s Detroit Business that in about one year the market could serve up to 30 local specialty food businesses in the community kitchen. Local entrepreneurs could rent part of the Eastern Market kitchens for about $20 per hour, but if the market’s management is able to find financing, the fee could decrease.
