The fruitful collaboration between Mayor Richard J. Berry and Friedman Recycling has led to a successful result–the opening of the single-stream materials recovery facility in Albuquerque. “This new facility is a symbol of our commitment to recycling and forever changes the way Albuquerque recycles,” Mayor Berry said. The new facility not only demonstrates care for the city and the environment, but also for the economy as it brings with it 35 new jobs that over time will grow to 75.
The cost to build the facility was about $21 million and the design, manufacture and installation were done by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS). The 90,000 square-foot facility has the latest technology in screening, air and optical sorting and is projected to handle 120,000 tons of recyclables per year gathered from approximately 177,000 residential customers. Materials to be recycled here are plastic bottles, cans, small electronic scrap, old corrugated containers, chipboard and paper.
The facility in Albuquerque is not the first contract Friedman Recycling has signed with BHS; in 2010 they’ve done the same in El Paso. “BHS has been a great partner for us,” said President Morris Friedman. “We’ve been aggressively growing our single-stream capabilities at all of our plants. We’ve enjoyed working with BHS to bring state-of-the-art recycling solutions to all of our municipal, commercial and institutional clients. BHS has great screens, and the sales, design, service and installation crews are top notch.”
“Friedman Recycling has shown a commitment to bringing innovative recycling solutions to the Southwest,” said BHS President John Warne. “This beautiful facility is the latest example and significantly enhances the way Albuquerque recycles – a testament to the Friedman family and all that make up their company.”
BHS has its headquarters in Eugene, Ore. They are renowned worldwide for designing, engineering, manufacturing and installing sorting systems and components for the solid waste, recycling, waste-to-energy and construction and demolition industry.
Friedman Recycling Companies is a family business headquartered in Phoenix. They provide recycling solutions for municipalities, businesses and institutions, and are considered to be one of the largest independent recycling companies in the Southwestern USA.
