Gansevoort Hotel Group founder & president Michael Achenbaum is taking his urban resort concept across the pond with the announcement of plans to develop a 120-key urban resort in London’s Shoreditch district.

The famed hotelier is partnering with Douglaston Development, SUSD and Hondo Enterprises to develop a full-service urban resort at 45 Curtain Road in East London’s  fashion district.

  1. “I’ve been interested in developing in London for some time, looking for the right opportunity to bring my concept of urban resorts to Europe,” Achenbaum told Commercial Property Executive. “The Shoreditch location and dynamics align well with my vision and I have been working with my partners over the past six months to bring this project to life.

The $98 million project will feature, in addition to the guestrooms, seven luxury suites, a restaurant, bi-level bar, rooftop swimming pool and lounge, 24-hour fitness center, more than 6,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and a tech incubator.

Architects Dexter Moren Associates and interior design group Design DMU will combine  Achenbaum’s high-end style and service with the edgy, urban vibe of the up-and-coming Tech City area in Shoreditch, paying homage to the district with designs inspired by the local street art scene.

Shoreditch is said to become a social hub for the entrepreneurial community while meeting the growing demand from London’s financial center and the many companies primed to build it up as an epicenter for technology, media and creative industries, according to the news release.

Achenbaum is best known for his urban design of East Coast hot spots, the purple-lit Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC rooftop hotel, opened in 2004, and Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC, opened in 2010 . The lifestyle hospitality brand has also built Gansevoort Turks & Caicos in 2009.
