Michigan Office Solutions (MOS), a subsidiary of Xerox Co. and provider of office and 3D printing technology, decided to move from its home in Grand Rapids into the former First Federal Building located at 1001 Woodward Avenue on Campus Martius Park, in the city’s commercial core. In a move that is expected to be a part of Detroit’s revitalization effort, MOS’ new space will also be used to showcase Xerox technology and innovation solutions, the company announced in a press release.

Completed in 1965, the 23-story tower was built for the first federal Savings and Loan of Detroit under plans designed by architecture firm Smith, Hinchman, & Grylls (now SmithGroupJJR). In 2008 the asset was acquired by Dimitrios “Jim” Papas’ Greektown Investment Group, LLC, for $5.4 million.

Five years later, 1001 Woodward changed ownership again. The building was purchased by Rock Ventures—the umbrella entity that was formed to provide coordination and guidance for Dan Gilbert’s portfolio of companies. Bedrock Real Estate Services, Rock Ventures’ sister company, was selected to manage the property and leasing activity at 1001 Woodward. According to information provided by real estate website PropertyShark, the 275,000-square-foot tower was sold in March 2013 for $32.25 million.

MOS, which was named the official print partner of the Detroit Red Wings in 2014, has already moved more than 24 full-time employees into the new location. The company will occupy 4,374 square feet of Class A office space at 1001 Woodward. To celebrate its move to Detroit, the company has launched a contest that offers non-profits the opportunity to win office technology equipment. Called “Make My NonProfit Run Better,” the contest will give away $50,000 to three winning organizations based in Detroit.
