Historic San Francisco Hotel Changes Management
- May 10, 2018
Sonesta International has taken over management of The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel, an iconic 372-key property in San Francisco. The current owner, Hospitality Properties Trust, acquired the building in 2012 for $119.5 million from Tarsadia Investments, according to public records.
Located at 495 Geary St. in the Tenderloin neighborhood, the hotel is centered in a bustling retail and hospitality district, just steps away from San Francisco’s Union Square and less than a mile south of Chinatown. The Powell Street BART station is situated within half a mile of the property, and Interstate 80 runs a mile to the southeast, providing access throughout the city and the wider metro area.
The hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1915 and, at the turn of the century, previous owner Ian Schrager invested $50 million in redeveloping the dated asset. The 17-story structure offers a mix of standard guestrooms and suites, ranging in size from 260 to 925 square feet. The property additionally contains one 1,175-square-foot luxury apartment-style suite. Guest amenities include 12,524 square feet of event space, complimentary bicycle rentals, a 24-hour fitness center, a business center and valet parking.
