JULY ISSUE: Inching Up to Record Levels

The relationship between pay and performance continues to strengthen, and thus, when examining the latest compensation trends, it warrants a brief look at the industry’s performance to help set the stage. This time last year, we asked whether compensation would hit a plateau for performance year 2013.
Interestingly enough, for the month immediately preceding last year’s publication, a somewhat dire mood confronted the industry for the first time since the conclusion of the financial crisis, as the Federal Open Market Committee minutes released on May 22, 2013, suggested Fed tapering could begin as early as June. For the month immediately thereafter, public equity REITs immediately traded significantly lower, giving up just over 13 percent stock returns, and nearly every major business outlet ran headlines such as “Investors Turn Away from Once Hot REITs” and “Rising Rates Hit REITs Hard.”
