Mace to Oversee Maintenance at Admiralty Extension in London

Mace has been appointed as project manager to oversee the design and refurbishment of 193,750 square feet of office space at the Old Admiralty, in London.
The current series of updates is part of a renovation program by The Cabinet Office department of the Government of the United Kingdom to consolidate and update the building for the Department for Education. The Grade II listed government estate is also known as the Admiralty Extension.
Mace is an international consultancy and construction company, offering integrated services across the full property and infrastructure life cycle. The firm works with specialists in project management, construction delivery, cost consultancy and facilities management. Mace has working experience in the London commercial office sector.
The Admiralty Extension dates from the turn of the 20th century and is the largest of the five buildings belonging to the so-called Admiralty complex. Located in the very heart of London, it is adjacent to significant landmarks like the Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster or Trafalgar Square. Since the Admiralty – the authority responsible for the command of the Royal Navy – no longer exists as a department, the government uses these properties as an office array. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been using the Old Admiralty Building since the ‘60s and the Department for Education will move into the building, following the renovations. The FCO consolidates its London staff into the Foreign Office’s King Charles Street Office in 2015.
A design procurement process goes ahead of the maintenance work, including consultation with Westminster City Council planning and English Heritage. The 193,750 square feet of office space will serve more than 1,600 DfE employees who are currently working in leasehold accommodation. Mace will be the lead designer of the project, providing project management, CDM, cost consultancy, and full multi-disciplinary design services in cooperation with Building Design Partnership and Hoare Lea. The building is to be designed and refurbished to achieve the BREEAM “Very Good” rating, bringing a number of environmentally friendly and energy efficient features to the project.
The renovations will start foreseeably in late 2015 with the project due for completion in 2017.
