JBG to Open 245-Unit Apartment Community in D.C.’s Shaw Neighborhood in 2015

Washington D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood, located in the city's Northwest quadrant, has attracted a lot of attention over the last few years. The JBG Companies is just the latest developer interested in this area named after Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The Chevy Chase-based private real estate development firm plans to bring a new, dynamic, mixed-use apartment community at the intersection of 8th Street and Florida Avenue.

Washington D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood, located in the city’s Northwest quadrant, has attracted a lot of attention over the last few years. The JBG Cos. is just the latest developer interested in this area, named after Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The Chevy Chase-based private real estate development firm plans to bring a new, dynamic mixed-use apartment community to the intersection of Eighth Street and Florida Avenue by 2015.

According to the developers, the 288,000-square-foot community will be called The Shay and will be one of the first new apartment communities to target the evolving Shaw neighborhood. It will feature 28,000 square feet of retail space and 245 studio, one- and two-bedroom units, with spacious, open layouts and custom kitchens. Community amenities will include below-grade parking; bike storage; conference areas; a dog washing station; a resident lounge with a bar, pool table and media center; a swimming pool; two landscaped roof decks; and more. The property will be located near the U Street corridor’s nightlife, art galleries, shopping and restaurants.

The Shay, a dual-building construction spanning both sides of Eighth Street, is designed to evoke an industrial past. It will display exposed concrete, expansive glass window walls and industrial detailing.

“Our objective is to offer an exciting option in city living to this vibrant part of the District,” said Lauren Jezienicki, a JBG vice president, in a statement for the press. “To accomplish that, we intend to integrate this property into the existing neighborhood fabric by introducing contemporary architecture that transitions in scale and aesthetic to complement the historic neighborhood context.”

JBG is working on the project with two architects, the award-winning Miller Hull Partnership of Seattle and the Minneapolis-based BKV Group. The Shay is expected to open in spring 2015. And it isn’t JBG’s only development in the area. The company is also redeveloping the former Atlantic Plumbing warehouse on V Street into apartments with retail on the ground floor.
