Nemours, Skanska Team Up for $400M Children’s Hospital in Orlando

Nemours has finalized the acquisition of 60 acres of land in the heart of Lake Nona’s medical city in Orlando, and plans to build a $400 million top-tier pediatric health care facility, anchored by a children’s hospital. The pediatric health system company tapped Skanska USA Building Co. as the construction manager to oversee the building process for the facilities. The 600,000-square-foot project is expected to break ground next year and will start receiving patients in 2012. It will be located in proximity to the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The OrlandoBusiness Journal also announced this week that Florida Hospital purchased a 100-acre site near Lake Nona, possibly for a future hospital. Lake Nona is home to the 600-acre Lake Nona Science & Technology Park. Overall, Central Florida had a $13.4 billion technology industry, according to the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission. And Skanska is no stranger to health care development in Florida; it also built the Shands Cancer Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Downtown Orlando, as well as oversaw the construction of the Parrish Healthcare Center in Port St. John, the first outpatient facility to be awarded LEED Silver certification in the state. The announcement adds yet another project to Skanska’s busy schedule. In the last month alone, it has been awarded: a $146 million contract for the construction of Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, which is scheduled for a 2010 completion; a $75.6 million contract for expansion of Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, scheduled for a 2010 completion; a $50 million contract for the expansion of St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, Calif., scheduled for a 2010 completion; and a $53 million contract for construction of a Carilion Health System clinic in Roanoke, Va. In all, Skanska is currently working on hospital projects with a total contract value of more than $5 billion.Blog Story and Comments
