New Luxury Boutique Hotel Coming to Chicago
- Aug 15, 2017
The Olympia Cos. and SMART Hotels are preparing to deliver their second hotel in Chicago’s Hyde Park, after Hyatt Place Chicago-South/University Medical Center. SOPHY, which is slated for completion in the summer of 2018, is designed as a four-diamond luxury property and expected to receive LEED certification upon delivery.
“The hotel is firmly rooted in Hyde Park’s history dating back to the turn of the century and, going forward, it will play a vital role in one of Chicago’s legendary neighborhoods. SOPHY aligns with SMART’s and Olympia’s expertise in developing and managing independent, award-winning boutique properties that evoke a strong sense of place and become an integral part of the community,” said Mike Zimmerman, vice president of development at The Olympia Cos., in prepared remarks.
An art-filled place
The 98-key hotel will be located at the corner of 53rd St. and Dorchester Avenue and will be the preferred guest house for the University of Chicago, which is in close proximity. Next to lodging, SOPHY will feature a bar, a restaurant, a fitness center, and will also exhibit the work pieces of contemporary Chicago artists.
In providing the interior design, Stonehill & Taylor were inspired by several renowned figures such as singer Mahalia Jackson, novelist Saul Bellow and scientist Enrico Fermini. The rest of the team involved in delivering the project is made up of GREC Architects as project architect and William A Randolph Inc., as developer.
In spring, The Olympia Cos. added another college-owned hotel to its portfolio, The Colby College hotel in Waterville, Maine.
