Notorious Levee District Hotel Gets a Fresh Start

One of Al Capone’s go-to Chicago hangouts is about to experience a long-awaited revival. The former Cullerton Hotel in the South Loop, later the home of the Blue Star Auto Parts store, will be transformed into a mixed-use asset with 22 apartments and ground floor retail, Curbed Chicago reports.
The plan was revealed about one year ago, after Windy City RE purchased the 137-year-old building at 2001 S. State St. as well as the adjacent property at 2000 S. Wabash Ave. The developer recently received permits to begin renovation work on the four-story brick building at an estimated cost of $2.8 million. The plan includes the interior renovation of the building to accommodate two retail spaces and 22 three-bedroom residential units.
“By building smaller three bedroom/two bathroom apartment units, we are delivering a product that is not yet seen in the South Loop,” said Milan Rubenstein, principal at Windy City RE. “Everyone down there is building luxury two bedroom condominiums. We are doing things differently,” he added.
Located in the notorious Levee, Chicago’s former red-light district, the building has been mostly vacant for the last four decades, with Blue Star Auto Parts as its only remaining tenant. The Cullerton Hotel was a very popular establishment in the 1920s.
