Orlando—As part of Boyd Development’s $1 billion Hamlin town center project, which will feature a mix of residential, retail and office uses throughout the 850-acre community in Southwest Orlando, a proton therapy center will be built in a new medical complex.
“We are developing a project on the Southwest side of Orlando on an interchange on the beltway system. It’s a town center that will feature a live/work/play environment, plus retail, office and entertainment,” Ken Kupp, Boyd Development partner, told Commercial Property Executive. “The medical component is attractive to us as a piece of the overall puzzle of the town center.”
The development company will partner with Provision Healthcare to create a state-of-the-art proton therapy center, which will bring cutting-edge cancer treatment to the Orlando area.
Hamlin’s proton therapy treatment center will consist of a three-treatment room center and will utilize the latest proton systems technology of ProNova Solutions LLC, which is an affiliate of Provision. It is projected that approximately 1,000 patients per year can be treated at the proton center.
“With this particular joint venture, what’s cool is that they have developed their own proton therapy equipment so they see patients, treat them and do a fantastic job of that,” Kupp said. “It appealed to us to partner with them, adjunct to our town center, bringing care that’s great for the community and the whole Central Florida area.”
The joint venture also plans to develop associated medical office buildings and cancer-treatment facilities on the campus.
Currently, there are fewer than 25 proton therapy centers operating in the U.S.
“The Provision Proton Center in Orlando will be our third center in the southeastern U.S., as Provision Healthcare continues to pursue our mission to make advanced cancer care and proton therapy more accessible by developing joint venture proton centers and cancer centers in the U.S., China, and around the world,” Dr. Terry Douglass, Provision Healthcare chairman & CEO, said in a prepared release.
Located within the Horizon West planning area in Southwest Orange County, Hamlin will be the premier waterfront community in Central Florida.
“We have a great opportunity on the Southwest side of Orlando to create a place, and that’s what we’re doing,” Kupp said.
