Pensacola, Fla.—Skanska has signed a $399 million design-build contract with the Florida Department of Transportation to construct a new bridge over Pensacola Bay in the Florida Panhandle.
The existing Pensacola Bay bridge will be replaced with two new, three-lane bridges connecting the cities of Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. Each bridge will be just over 3 miles in length, with the total project measuring 3.7 miles, including roadway approaches on each end of the bridges.
Completed back in 1960, the bridge known as the Three-Mile Bridge currently carries four lanes of U.S. Highway 98 across Pensacola Bay. Dedicated to Sen. Phillip Beall Sr., the bridge was deemed structurally deficient in 2010 and a deadline of six years was established for its replacement.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2016 and is scheduled for completion in August 2020.
