Skanska to Build Research Center for University of Connecticut for $88M
- Feb 13, 2014
Skanska USA has been tapped by the University of Connecticut to erect the educational institution’s new 115,000-square-foot Innovation Partnership Building research facility on the campus in Storrs, Conn. Skanska’s contract for the endeavor, which will be the first building of the UConn Technology Park complex, is $88 million.
The State of Connecticut has allocated $172 million for the development of IPB, which will feature shared, flexible laboratory accommodations and a design by the noted architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The R&D space will consist of cleanroom and high-bay advanced materials and manufacturing laboratories. Even the lobby will serve a special purpose; it will be designed for use as a space for events, meetings, symposia and the like.
Skanska has commenced operations for the endeavor and expects to complete construction in January 2017.
The IPB contract is not Skanska’s first with UConn. The company was selected in 2010 to construct a 150,000-square-foot building with classrooms and lecture halls under a contract valued at $41.3 million.
