Tyson Foods to Invest $300M in 5th TN Plant
- Nov 21, 2017
Tyson Foods Inc., one of the world’s largest food processors, intends to build a $300 million production facility in Humboldt, Tenn. The investment is expected to create more than 1,500 local jobs once the processing plant begins operations in late 2019. Outside contractors will help build the project, and Tyson Foods expects it will involve hundreds of workers.
The plant will be located within the Gibson County Industrial Park, just north of Humboldt. The company plans to work with area farmers to raise chickens. The facility will be comprised of a processing plant, hatchery, a feed mill and related operations. Tyson Foods will build these in and around Humboldt. The new plant will produce pre-packaged trays of fresh chicken for retail grocery stores nationwide and is expected to process 1.3 million birds per week.
The payroll and payments to farmers from the new operation, along with its purchase of grain and utilities, is expected to generate an annual economic benefit to the state of Tennessee of $150 million.
Fifth location in TN
This marks the second major economic development project Tyson Foods initiated in Tennessee this year. The new facility will be the company’s fifth location in the state.
“Our company has been successfully producing chicken in Tennessee for more than 45 years. The location is attractive to us because of the strong support we’ve received from state and local leaders, the existing industrial park and availability of labor, as well as access to feed grains produced in the region,” said Doug Ramsey, group president of Poultry for Tyson Foods, in a prepared statement.
In August, the company announced an $84 million expansion of its Union City, Tenn., operations. Including Union City, Tyson Foods currently operates four facilities in Tennessee, employing about 5,000 people with an annual payroll of more than $181 million.
The Middle Tennessee region is in a boom period, with Nashville, Tenn., among the fastest growing economies in the U.S. Demand for industrial facilities has been high and new construction in the area tries to keep pace with the region’s growth. Most recently, Premier Design + Build Group completed the construction of a 652,000-square-foot industrial building in suburban Nashville.
