The Urban Land Institute appointed Thomas Toomey as its new global chairman. Toomey has been a longtime ULI member, trustee and Foundation governor and will serve a two-year term ending June 30, 2019. He is currently the chief executive officer, president & a director at UDR Inc., a $16 million multifamily REIT.

As global chairman, Toomey will be responsible for emphasizing the institute’s delivery of member value and mission advancement, with the goal to ensure ULI continues to lead the future of global urban development. He will also be supporting and facilitating member efforts to advance ULI’s mission in each of the regions where it has a presence: the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Toomey will work with ULI Americas Chairman Patricia Healy, ULI Europe Chairman Jon Zehner and ULI Asia Pacific Chairman Dr. Seek Ngee Huat, to improve knowledge sharing across all ULI member networks. This includes the Institute’s district and national councils, which serve members at a local level, and the product council program, the network of members organized by property sector categories.

ULI Background

Toomey has a strong record of working with ULI, including his new roles as global chairman of the ULI Global Board of Directors and global chairman of the ULI Foundation Board of Directors. In the past year he served as treasurer and is a longstanding member of ULI’s Multifamily Product Council. He also served on the Larson Leadership Advisory Board, chaired the Urban Innovation Grant Committee, and was co-chairman of the host committee for ULI’s 2012 Fall Meeting in Denver. He’s also been actively involved in ULI Colorado.

“The only way to keep ULI’s momentum going is to offer members new opportunities for engagement, to share lessons learned, and exchange ideas about what works best,” said Toomey, in prepared remarks. “Nearly everything that makes our cities exciting and interesting is tied to the use of land. If we can help more members use their ULI experience to make a difference in their communities, we can influence the future of urban growth around the world. That’s a powerful imprint.”

Chairman Goals

Toomey will be focusing on the following areas during his term as global chairman:

  • Expanding ULI’s Advisory Services program
  • Use of technology to connect members
  • Facilitating the creation of volunteer opportunities
  • Improving member-to-member networking through online communities
  • Refining ULI’s content to ensure that it is based on member expertise, forward looking, applicable to members’ day-to-day work, and highlights practices that make a solid business case
  • Expanding ULI’s membership to include more offerings for entire companies rather than just individuals

UDR Track Record

At UDR, Toomey played a large role in repositioning the company’s portfolio, including the acquisition, disposition and development of more than $19 billion in multifamily communities. As of March, UDR owned or held an ownership interest in more than 50,000 apartment homes in primary markets across the United States. Before leading UDR, Toomey was chief operating officer & chief financial officer at AIMCO and senior vice president with Lincoln Property Co.

“We are delighted to have Tom as our global chairman,” said Patrick Phillips, global chief executive officer for ULI, in prepared remarks. “He is constantly thinking about what’s ahead for our industry and our communities. Tom’s thoughtful leadership is exactly what ULI needs to stay at the forefront of change and lead the future of urban development.”
