United Natural Foods Inc. has announced plans to open a new state-of-the-art distribution facility in Aurora, Colo. Located near I-70 in the Denver International Airport corridor, the 535,000-square-foot facility will serve as a distribution hub for retailers in the Rocky Mountain region as well as Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
United Natural Foods Inc. will consolidate its four existing Denver-based distribution facilities into the new facility, which is expected to begin operations in the summer of 2013. The consolidation of Denver-based operations aims to extend the company’s focus on lowering operating costs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving productivity. United Natural Foods Inc. noted that the transition is not expected to impact any existing jobs. The new facility is planned to open with 475 associates and eventually employ up to 550 associates within the first three years.
The new distribution facility will feature over 42,000 square feet of office space and approximately 160,000 square feet of refrigeration and freezer space. Once operations commence, the company plans to pursue LEED certification. The environmental design plans focus on resource and energy conservation; the use of sustainable and recycled-content building materials; and indoor air quality for the occupants.
President and CEO of the Aurora Economic Development Council, Wendy Mitchell, said: “We are thrilled UNFI chose to stay in Aurora and build a new facility to house its growing workforce. Aurora is privileged to have the opportunity to have one of the few construction projects of this size in the metro area, and to have it built with emphasis on LEED certification.”
