Port Tampa Bay offered a sneak peek into the revitalization of the industrial waterfront along Channelside Drive and the Ybor Channel. Over the next decade or so, the 45-acre port-owned land will be converted into a dynamic live-work-play community centerpiece.
The vision plan calls for the development of more than 9 million square feet of mixed-use space and $1.5 billion in private investment. It builds upon the area’s ongoing revitalization, maximizing the potential of the site. The preliminary plan features a mix of private development and public amenities. This includes residential, retail, office and hotel space, as well as a central park, marina and multipurpose cruise ship terminal. A key element of the plan is a pair of landmark towers, marked out to join the list of the tallest constructions on Florida’s West Coast.
The plan is the result of PTB’s partnership with the City of Tampa and the Channel District Community Redevelopment Agency. It is part of a larger overall plan for the 5,000-acre port over the next two decades. The announcement of a more detailed master plan is expected in the next year.
Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik’s company, Strategic Property Partners also has plans to turn 40 acres near Amalie Arena into a similar urban neighborhood. The development adjacent to the PTB project includes a downtown medical school for the University of South Florida and an office tower housing a company headquarters.
