Washington Prime Group has announced plans for DeBartolo Commons, a 4-acre athletic and entertainment green space and event venue located at the Southern Park Mall in Youngstown, Ohio.

The project will be constructed on the site of a former Sears department store. The partnership will also include the DeBartolo-York family, the Boardman Township and its park district. The announcement was coupled with the beginning of major renovations at the Southern Park Mall. The redevelopment will coincide with the mall’s 50th anniversary next year.

Located at 7401 Market St., the Southern Park Mall serves roughly 565,000 residents of the Greater Youngstown MSA and is adjacent to the recently renovated Cinemark Theaters. The improvements will consist of a 37,000-square-foot indoor golf center and accompanying restaurant, an entertainment venue, and new dining options.

Recently, Washington Prime Group entered into an agreement with Safari Energy to install solar panels on the rooftops of two malls in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Stockton, Calif. The project is part of the REIT’s sustainability efforts.
